Sister Evelyn Kane, R.S.C.J.

Sister Evelyn Kane, R.S.C.J., who served as secretary for education of the New York Province of the Society of the Sacred Heart, died Dec. 2 at Teresian House, Albany. She was 92.

She served as provincial secretary for her order in New York, 1969-1970. She spent her most of her life teaching at Sacred Heart schools in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Connecticut.

She also spent many summers working with migrant farm workers in Michigan and North Carolina.

She was a pastoral minister at a parish in Stamford, Conn., starting in 1983. She also taught adult scripture classes there as well as at a parish in Darien and at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, 1990-2004.

Sister Evelyn earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Notre Dame College of Staten Island, a master’s in education from Manhattanville College and a master’s in mathematics from the University of Detroit.

Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1942 at Kenwood in Albany and professed final vows in Rome in 1950.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 11 at the Teresian House Chapel, Albany. Burial was at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Kenwood.
