Sister Grace Henke, S.C.

Sister Grace Henke, S.C., who was an instructor at St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in Manhattan for 35 years, died April 27 at St. Vincent de Paul Rehabilitation Center in the Bronx. She was 88.

Sister Grace was at St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing, 1963-1998. She was an adjunct professor at the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx, 1982-2003, and a nurse and student at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Manhattan, 1954-1963.

Sister Grace served as a board member of the Bronx Organization for the Learning Disabled, 2008-2011, and was a member and board member of Lifespire, Manhattan, 2002-2008.

She received the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award from St. Vincent’s Medical Center in 2003.

Born in the Bronx, she was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Manhattan. She entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1951 and professed final vows in 1959.

She received a nursing diploma from St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, Manhattan. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and master’s in medical/surgical nursing, both from Hunter College, Manhattan, and a doctorate in nursing research from Columbia University, Manhattan.

A Memorial Mass and burial of cremains will be scheduled at a later date.
