Sister Grace Marie Petraglia, O.P.

Sister Grace Marie Petraglia, O.P., who served as principal of five schools in the archdiocese, died Aug. 26 in Siena Hall Infirmary in Sparkill. She was 84.

Sister Grace Marie was principal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Middletown, 1989-1993; St. Matthew’s, Hastings-on-Hudson, 1985-1988; and Holy Name of Jesus, Valhalla, 1979-1984. She also served as principal of St. Augustine’s, New City, 1966-1971, and St. Anthony’s, Yonkers, 1972-1978, where she had previously taught for a year.

She also taught at St. Martin of Tours, the Bronx, 1952-1957; Christ the King, Yonkers, 1978-1979; and in Fulton.

She served as assistant superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Newark, 1984-1985; in the admissions office of Long Island University; and as secretary to the executive team of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, 1994-1998. Upon her retirement she offered community service at Dominican Convent and at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1950 and professed final vows in 1957. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Antoninus.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University and a master’s in education from Manhattan College.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 29 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel at Dominican Convent, Sparkill. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery there.
