Sister Helen Dolores Smith, O.P., who taught in the archdiocese, died Sept. 21 in the Dominican Sisters of Hope infirmary in Newburgh. She was 88. She taught at St. Mary's School, Poughkeepsie, 1981-1985; St. Thomas of Canterbury, Cornwall-on-Hudson, 1978-1979; Holy Rosary, Hawthorne, 1972-1973; Regina Coeli, Hyde Park, 1955-1959, and Guardian Angel, Manhattan, 1951-1955.She also taught in Puerto Rico and was a principal, teacher and school secretary in New Jersey. She moved to the sisters' Center of Hope in Newburgh in 1999. Born in Saranac, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh in 1949 and professed final vows in 1954. She held bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Villanova University. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 25 at the Center of Hope, with burial in the sisters' cemetery.
