Sister Joan Chatfield, M.M., who served in Hawaii for 50 years, died March 1 in Oahu, Hawaii. She was 86.

Sister Joan was in Hawaii, 2004-2019, 1980-1999 and 1956-1972, as a high school teacher, department chairwoman, high school counselor, college teacher and dean, and executive director for the Institute for Religion and Social Change.

She was director of the Maryknoll Sisters Mission Institute, Ossining, 1974-1977.

Born in Elizabeth, N.J., she entered Maryknoll in 1950 and professed final vows in 1959.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Manhattanville College, Purchase; a master’s in theology from the University of San Francisco; and a doctorate in philosophy from Theological Union-Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, Calif.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated March 21 at Sacred Heart Church, Honolulu. Burial was in Diamond Head Memorial Park, Honolulu.
