Sister Joan Marie Berninger, M.M., who served at Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining for 32 years, died there Feb. 10. She was 86.

She was coordinator of Maryknoll Sisters Center, 1982-1985; director of Maryknoll Sisters Mission Institute, 1978-1981; and worked in the administration office and taught art at Maryknoll Teachers College, 1956-1967.

More recently, she served as a secretary in the Maryknoll Sisters Nursing Home Care Unit, 2014-2019; coordinator of congregational services, 2002-2012.

She also served in Chicago, New Mexico and Hawaii.
Born in LaSalle, Ill., she entered the Maryknoll Sisters Novitiate in 1953 and professed final vows in 1962.

Sister Joan received a bachelor’s degree in education from Maryknoll Teachers College, Ossining; a master’s in liberal studies and theology from Manhattanville College, Purchase; and a master’s in education from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M.

She donated her body to science. A Memorial Mass was offered Feb. 13 in Annunciation Chapel at Maryknoll.
