Sister Joan Miriam Ling, M.M., who entered religious life in China during the turbulent years following the Communist Revolution, died Oct. 30 in Kowloon, Hong Kong. She was 83.

Initially joining the Sister Catechists of the Blessed Virgin Mary, she and two other sisters were sent to Macau in 1950 to study. They were separated from their religious community, which was subsequently disbanded. She was also cut off from her family until 1977.

The Maryknoll Sisters helped the three young nuns find placement in Hong Kong. She entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1959 in Ossining and professed final vows in Hong Kong in 1968.

Assigned to the South China region in 1963, she served in catechetical work in Miaoli, Taiwan. She returned to Hong Kong in 1971, where she administered the nurses’ hostel at the Diocesan Pastoral Care Center until 1974, when she was named the center’s manager. She served in that capacity until 1987.

She also served at the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining as hospitality coordinator, 1990-1991, and in the Treasury Office, 1993-1996.

A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 9 at St. Teresa’s Church, Kowloontong, Hong Kong. Burial followed there at Cheung Sha Wan Cemetery.
