Sister Joan O’Shea, O.P.

Sister Joan O’Shea, O.P., who taught at Our Lady of Refuge School in the Bronx, died Dec. 7, at St. Elizabeth Manor in Footville, Wis. She was 90.

She taught at Our Lady of Refuge, 1950-1958.

She also taught in Chicago and Green Bay and Madison, Wis., where she was a principal as well.

At Rosary College, now Dominican University, in River Forest, Ill., she served as an assistant professor and dean of students, and later as promoter of mission integration.

Sister Joan served as provincial for the Eastern Province of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, Wis., 1988-1992.

She served as a hospital chaplain in Duluth, Minn., was director of chaplains at a medical center in South Bend, Ind., and was director of pastoral care at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Born in Chicago, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa in 1948 and made final vows in 1953. She received a bachelor’s degree from Rosary College.

She is survived by a sister, Therese Duranso.

The Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 15 at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa. Burial was in the motherhouse cemetery.
