Sister Loretta Kruegler, M.M., who was a missioner to Panama and Nicaragua, died Oct. 7 at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow. She was 76.

From 1953 to 1980, she served in Panama City as a grade school teacher, parish minister and coordinator of pastoral works in a parish. She returned in 2000, doing pastoral work until earlier this year.

She also served in Ocotal, Nicaragua, 1980-1983, as a parish minister. She returned to that country in 1987 in response to an urgent request for volunteers to do pastoral work and remained until 1995.

She served in Maryknoll's development department in Ossining from 1983 until 1987, and again from 1996 until 1999.

Born in Troy, she entered Maryknoll in 1949 and professed final vows in 1955.

She is survived by two brothers, John and James. Among those who predeceased her are a brother, Father William C. Kruegler, M.M., who was killed in Bolivia, where he was serving, in 1962; and two sisters, Sister Catherine Bernard, C.S.J., and Sister Francis Mary, C.S.J.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 11 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center Chapel, with burial in the sisters' cemetery.
