Sister Lydia Lojo Cruz, O.Ss.R., died Jan. 21 at Ozanam Hall Nursing Home in Bayside, Queens. She was 90.

She served the Order of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptoristine Nuns) in Esopus as vocation director, novice mistress, council member and sub-prioress.

She was also a sacristan and cook, and sewed religious habits for Redemptorist priests and brothers and capes for the Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

She translated and edited the Redemptoristines’ Viva Memoria Journal. In that capacity, she also lived in England and attended General Assemblies in Italy.

In 1985 she helped Father Pablo Straub, C.Ss.R., establish a community of women consecrated to the Most Holy Savior in Mexico.

Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, she was a member of the Legion of Mary and entered the Order of the Most Holy Redeemer in Esopus in 1963. She made final vows in 1965.

The order moved to the Carmelite Monastery in Beacon in 2013. She had resided at Ozanam Hall Nursing Home in Bayside since 2019.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

A private Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 25 in the Chapel of the Carmelite Monastery in Beacon. Burial was at Mount St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Esopus.
