Sister M. Immaculata Burke, S.C., who served for 43 years in Guatemala, died March 8 at her home in Novillero, Guatemala. She was 94.

She had served in Guatemala since 1971 in health promotion and the education of women, particularly among the Mayan people.

In 1992 Pope John Paul II awarded her the papal medal “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” for her distinguished service to the Church.

She served at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan as a nurse and administrative supervisor, 1956 to 1970.

She also served in the Bahamas, India and England.

Born in Mullingar, Ireland, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1953 and professed final vows in 1961.

She is survived by her brothers, James and Patrick.

A Funeral Mass was offered March 10 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Novillero, Guatemala. Burial was in Santa Lucia Cemetery in Utatlan, Guatemala.
