Sister Madelyn Kortendick, O.P., who served at schools in the Bronx and Manhattan, died Dec. 24 at St. Dominic’s Villa, Sinsinawa, Wis., on her 97th birthday.

She taught at Corpus Christi School, Manhattan, 1969-1974, and at Our Lady of Refuge, the Bronx, 1957-1960, where she returned as principal, 1978-1981.

She was a teacher, principal, pastoral minister and member of support staff at parishes in Illinois and Wisconsin. She was also one of the first missionaries sent by her congregation to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where she taught English and catechism and served as a pastoral minister.

Born in Pecatonica, Ill., she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa in 1935 and professed final vows in 1940. She was formerly known as Sister Sulpice.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 30 at Queen of the Rosary Chapel, Sinsinawa. Burial was in the motherhouse cemetery.
