Sister Margaret Tryon, M.M.

Sister Margaret Tryon, M.M., who served as a missioner to Hawaii and the Marshall Islands, died Jan. 28 at Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining. She was 90.

Sister Margaret was assigned to Hawaii, where she taught home economics and English at the Maryknoll School in Punahou, 1953-1957. She later taught in grade schools on Oahu and Maui.

She also taught in Majuro in the Marshall Islands.

She served in the food services department at Maryknoll Sisters Center, 1971-1972. She then returned to the Marshall Islands, where she taught, organized a teacher training program and was involved in radio training.

From 1975 to 1997, she served in Hawaii and at Maryknoll in Ossining. Her final assignment in Hawaii involved pastoral ministry and prison ministry with women at Oahu Community Correctional Center.

In 2000, she retired to Maryknoll Sisters Center.

Born in Eddington, Pa., she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1947. She professed final vows in 1953. She was formerly known as Sister M. Dorothy Francis.

She earned an associate’s degree in applied sciences at Westchester Community College and received a bachelor’s in education at Maryknoll Teachers College.

She is survived by two brothers, William and James, and a sister, Gertrude.

Sister Margaret donated her body to science. A Memorial Mass was offered Feb. 2 at Annunciation Chapel in the Maryknoll Sisters Center.
