Sister Maria Goretti Biggins, O.P., who taught at Catholic schools and held other education posts, died Dec. 5 at Nyack Hospital. She was 79.

Most recently, she worked for New York state as an educational consultant from 1996 to 2002. During that time, she also served her congregation as historian.

She worked at Bronx Community College, 1994-1996; Catholic Guardian Society, 1986-1992; and was a research assistant at Columbia University, 1982-1986.

She taught at St. Dominic’s School, Blauvelt, 1953-1956 and 1973-1977; St. Luke’s School, the Bronx, 1956-1963; Holy Cross School, Manhattan, 1963-1970; St. Martin de Porres School, Poughkeepsie, 1971-1972; and Christ the King, the Bronx, 1977-1982.

Born in New York City, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt in 1950 and professed final vows in 1957.

She held a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s in history and philosophy of education from Fordham University, and a doctorate in curriculum and teaching from Columbia University.

She is survived by her sisters, Josephine Sheridan and Mary Ellen Desmond.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 11 at St. Dominic’s Covent, with burial in the sisters’ cemetery, both in Blauvelt.
