Sister Marie Bernadette Wyman, who served at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin at Mount Loretto on Staten Island, died Aug. 31. She was 92.
Sister Bernadette served at Mount Loretto as a teacher, social worker, administrator and executive director. She was there from 1964 to 1990, except for one year when she was principal of Holy Name School, New Rochelle.
In later years, she served as general minister of her Franciscan community and was the director of religious education at a parish in Port Richey, Fla.
She also was director of pastoral care at St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, where she earlier was director of mission effectiveness.
She played a leading role in the unification of Franciscan congregations that formed the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities in 2004.
Born in South Dorset, Vt., she entered the Sisters of the St. Francis Mission of the Immaculate Virgin in 1947 and made final vows in 1952.
She held a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College; a master’s in romance languages and one in social work, both from Fordham University; and a master’s in theology from St. John’s University.
A private Funeral Mass was planned at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, with burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery in White Plains.
