Sister Marie DeCurtis, F.S.P.

Sister Marie DeCurtis, F.S.P., who spent nearly half a century as an educator in the archdiocese, died July 28 at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 82.

She taught at Assumption School, Peekskill, 1983-1997, and was administrator of Franciscan High School, Mohegan Lake, 1977-1983, where she taught, 1974-1977.

More recently, she was guidance secretary and computer room supervisor at Maria Regina High School, Hartsdale.

She earlier taught at Assisium Business School, Manhattan; the St. Joseph’s branch of Cathedral High School, Manhattan; Ladycliff College, Highland Falls; Immaculate Conception School, Irvington-on-Hudson; St. Joseph’s Home and School, Peekskill, where she was also a group mother; and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Manhattan.

She also taught and was principal of St. Joseph’s School, West New York, N.J.

Born in New York City, she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Peace in 1950 and professed final vows in 1957. She was formerly known as Sister M. Raymond.

She held a bachelor’s degree in history from Ladycliff College and a master’s in history from Hunter College, City University of New York.

She is survived by two stepbrothers and two stepsisters.

A Funeral Mass was offered July 31 in the chapel at Marian Woods, Hartsdale. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Yonkers.
