Sister Marie Hermann, R.G.S., who served for many years as a prison chaplain, died Dec. 17 in Harwich, Mass. She was 80. She became a chaplain at the New York City Correctional Institution for Men on Rikers Island in 1984. After 10 years, she became Rikers Island administrative chaplain, 1994-2004. In 2004 she did pastoral care service at Cabrini Adult Day Care Center, Manhattan. Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Good Shepherd Sisters in 1957 and took the religious name Sister Marie deLourdes. She professed final vows in 1964. In her early ministry, she was a child care supervisor at Villa Loretta and Mount Florence in Peekskill. She also served in that capacity in Albany, Huntington and in New Jersey. She became involved in the "Women in Need" program in Manhattan in 1984, where she ministered until going into prison service. She held a bachelor's degree from Fordham University. Surviving is a sister, Dolores Guner. A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 21 at Good Shepherd Center, Marlborough, Mass., with burial in Mount Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury, Mass.
