Sister Marie Liguori Leyer, S.C., who served for 38 years at the New York Foundling Hospital in Manhattan, died Dec. 11 at Mary the Queen Convent in Yonkers. She was 97. She worked in the finance office of the Foundling from 1962 to 1998, then served for two more years there as a volunteer. Earlier, she taught at the following schools in the archdiocese: Blessed Sacrament, the Bronx, 1957-1962; St. Mary's, Staten Island, 1944-1957; St. Lawrence Academy, Manhattan, 1941-1942; St. Francis Xavier, Manhattan, 1931-1935; and St. Joseph's, the Bronx, 1931. She also taught at schools run by the Sisters of Charity in the Bahamas, 1935-1941 and 1942-1943, and in Southampton, 1943-1944. Born in Manhattan, she grew up in the Bronx and entered the Sisters of Charity in 1929. She professed final vows in 1935. She held a bachelor's degree from the College of Mount St. Vincent. A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 13 at Mary the Queen Convent with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Yonkers.
