Sister Marita Paul Hammond, F.S.P.

Sister Marita Paul Hammond, F.S.P., a social worker who served in the archdiocese, died Aug. 28 in New York City. She was 88.

She was director of the Nazareth Life Center in Garrison, 1980-2009. She also served at St. Joseph’s Home, Peekskill, as a social worker, 1960-1967, and then as administrator, 1967-1980. She was a group mother at the Lt. Joseph Kennedy Home in the Bronx, 1949-1960. Previously she also served at Assumption School, Peekskill, 1947-1949, and Mount St. Francis Chapel, 1946-1947.

Born in New York City, she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Peace in 1943 and professed final vows in 1950. She held a bachelor’s degree in English from Ladycliff College and a master’s in social work from Fordham University. A certified social worker, she was a member of the National Association of Social Workers.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 2 at Marian Woods, Hartsdale. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Yonkers.
