Sister Martin Fleming, R.S.H.M.

Sister Martin Fleming, R.S.H.M., who taught at Marymount School of New York in Manhattan for 12 years, died Dec. 13 at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown. She was 89.

Sister Martin was a faculty member at Marymount School of New York, 1987-1999. She also taught at St. Barnabas High School, the Bronx, 1986-1987; St. Joseph’s School, Manhattan, 1975-1983; and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Manhattan, 1972-1975. 

She also served in Brooklyn, Sag Harbor, Virginia, France and England. 

Born in Cummer, County Galway, Ireland, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1956 and professed final vows in 1963.

She received a bachelor’s degree in history from Marymount College, Tarrytown; a master’s in education from Hunter College, Manhattan; and a master’s in religious studies from St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie.

Her sisters, Sister Agnes Fleming, R.S.H.M., Kathleen Fleming Wall, Bridgie McEvoy and Eileen Flood; and her brothers, Patrick and Martin, survive her.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 17 in Marymount Convent. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
