Sister Mary Catherine Ryan, S.C., who taught in several schools in the archdiocese, died April 11 at Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry. She was 87.
She taught in Manhattan at Holy Cross Academy, 1966-1967, St. Joseph Academy, 1963-1965, St. Joseph School, 1959-1963 and Sacred Heart, 1956-1959; and at Resurrection, Rye, 1964-1965, and SS. Peter and Paul, the Bronx, 1953-1956.
A native of Manhattan, she attended Holy Trinity School and Blessed Sacrament High School, both in Manhattan. She entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1950 and made final vows in 1958. She received the religious name Sister Miriam Richard.
In 1967, she was granted an Indult of Exclaustration from the congregation. As a laywoman, she continued her work as a teacher of young children and an artist; she married and was widowed.
In 2003, the Sisters of Charity of New York accepted her request to return, and in 2006 she professed final vows.
She offered volunteer services in the Development Office at the Sisters of Charity Center, the Bronx; Convent of Mary the Queen, Yonkers; and Mount St. Vincent Convent, the Bronx.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx, and a master’s in art education from Pratt Institute, Manhattan.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at a later date. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Yonkers.
