Sister Mary Duane, S.C., who was a teacher and guidance counselor in archdiocesan schools, died Jan. 3 at Mary the Queen Convent in Yonkers. She was 71.

   She served for 12 years at St. Raymond Academy in the Bronx, where she was a teacher, 1993-1997 and 1988-1990; a guidance counselor, 1990-1993; and dean of students, 1985-1988.

   At St. Gabriel’s High School in New Rochelle, she was assistant administrator, 1983-1985, and a teacher, 1977-1983. She also taught at St. Peter’s on Staten Island, 1971-1977; St. Joachim’s in Beacon, 1968-1971; Our Lady of Good Counsel, 1965-1968, and Immaculate Conception, 1958-1965, both in Manhattan; and St. Peter’s in Yonkers, 1958.

   She assisted and provided pastoral care at Mary the Queen Convent, 1998-2004, and resided at St. Patrick Villa in Nanuet for three years before returning to Mary the Queen last year.

   Born in Manhattan, she entered the Sisters of Charity in 1955 and professed final vows in 1963. She held a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent and a master’s in geography from St. Louis University. She was known formerly as Sister David Mary.

   She is survived by three brothers, William, John and James, and three sisters, Anne Duane, Ellen King and Kathleen Dillon.

   A Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 5 at Mary the Queen Convent, with burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Yonkers.
