Sister Mary Gian Carla of Calvary, F.M.S.C.

Sister Mary Gian Carla of Calvary, F.M.S.C., who served as a cook and seamstress, died Oct. 31. She was 98.

She was in charge of the clothes room at Mount St. Francis Convent, Peekskill, 1977-2012, where she spent many hours making habits and repairs for the sisters. She earlier taught sewing in the novitiate.

She also cooked for several decades, beginning in 1938 at the Boys’ House at St. Joseph’s Home, Peekskill, and from 1946 at Mount St. Francis Convent. She also served at the Kennedy Home, the Bronx, and at the Priests’ House on the convent grounds. She assisted in various capacities at a school in East Paterson, N.J.

Born in Treviso, Italy, she entered the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1936 and made final vows in 1949.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 4 in the chapel of Mount St. Francis Convent in Peekskill. Burial was in the sisters’ cemetery.
