Sister Mary Irene Pekar, S.S.N.D.

Sister Mary Irene Pekar, S.S.N.D., who taught in Manhattan, died Oct. 19 at Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut. She was 89. She taught at St. Joseph’s, Yorkville, 1958-1964. She also taught for many years at schools in Connecticut, and in her later years ministered to terminally ill sisters at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, Conn. Born in Bridgeport, she was one of 15 children in her family. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1935 and professed final vows in 1944. She earned a bachelor’s degree at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. She is survived by a sister, Anne Marie Previs. A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 23 at Villa Notre Dame Chapel in Wilton, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bethel, Conn.
