Sister Mary John Horan, R.J.M.

Sister Mary John Horan, R.J.M., who served as a director of religious education and a school administrator and teacher in the archdiocese, died Feb. 16 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. She was 79. She was director of religious education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Tuxedo, 1987-1997, and then served as treasurer of Thevenet Montessori School in Highland Mills, 1997-2002. She had taught at Thevenet Hall Academy in Highland Mills, 1959-1967 and 1968-1971, and at St. John's School, the Bronx, 1955-1959. She was superior of the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Highland Mills, 1968-1971. Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Religious of Jesus and Mary in 1952 and professed final vows in 1961. She held a bachelor's degree in education from Fordham University. She is survived by her sister, Mary Horan, and her brother, John. A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 20 at Bethany Spirituality Center in Highland Mills, with burial in the convent cemetery.
