Sister Mary Virginia Brown, P.B.V.M.

Sister Mary Virginia Brown, P.B.V.M., who was a principal at two schools and also was a teacher, died June 16 at St. Luke’s-Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. She was 89.

She was principal of St. Paul’s School in Yonkers, 1968-1981, and was a teacher there, 1950-1955. She was principal of Holy Rosary, the Bronx, 1964-1968, and taught there, 1944-1950.

She was assistant principal at St. John’s School, Yonkers, 1981-1994, and was a teacher at St. Mary’s School, Kingston, 1955-1961, and Our Lady of Solace, the Bronx, 1961-1964.

She was secretary for the Archdiocesan Building Commission in Manhattan from 1995 until her retirement in 2005, and before that was school secretary for a year at Annunciation in Crestwood.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1942 and professed final vows in 1947. She held a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and a master’s in education from SUNY Plattsburgh.

She is survived by a sister, Helen Pike. A Funeral Mass was offered June 19 at Mount St. Joseph Chapel in New Windsor, with burial in Mount St. Joseph Cemetery.
