Sister Mildred McCloskey, I.H.M.

Sister Mildred McCloskey, I.H.M., who taught at Sacred Hearts Elementary School in Manhattan, died April 21 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa.

Sister Mildred taught at Sacred Hearts in 1948. She also taught in Syracuse, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Later, she served on the staff at a school, a convent and a center run by her religious congregation in Pennsylvania.

Born in Jessup, Pa., she entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1943 and made final vows in 1950. She held a bachelor’s degree in business/social science from Marywood College in Scranton. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Avila.

She is survived by a sister, Maryclaire O’Dea, and nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was offered April 27 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton. Burial was at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa.
