Sister Patricia E. McGowan, S.C., who served at the College of Mount St. Vincent in the Bronx for 38 years, died April 19 at St. John Riverside Hospital in Yonkers. She was 80.

Sister Patricia was at Mount St. Vincent as a professor, 1981-2019, and also served as chairperson of the communications department, 1987-1996. She received the Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award from the college in 1991.

She taught at Our Lady of Angels School, the Bronx, 1971-1980; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Manhattan, 1965-1971; Our Lady of Mercy, Port Chester, 1959-1965; and St. Brigid, Manhattan, 1959.

Born in Manhattan, she was a graduate of Cathedral High School. She entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1956 and professed final vows in 1964.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in art from the College of Mount St. Vincent, and master’s degrees in education from Hunter College, journalism from New York University, and higher and adult education from Columbia University. Her sister, Nancy Kavanaugh, survives her.

Burial was April 22 in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Yonkers. A Memorial Mass will be planned in the future.
