Sister Rita Farrell, O.P.

Sister Rita Farrell, O.P., who served as principal and assistant principal at St. Brendan School in the Bronx in the 1970s and 1980s, died June 13 in Siena Hall at Dominican Convent in Sparkill. She was 88.

At St. Brendan, Sister Rita was principal, 1977-1982, and assistant principal, 1975-1977. She served as business manager at Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, 1989-2012. She taught at Iona Prep, New Rochelle, 1982-1989; Our Lady of Grace School, the Bronx, 1958-1967; and St. Ann, the Bronx, 1953-1958.

She served in child care at St. Agnes Home and School, Sparkill, 1953, and Cardinal McCloskey Home and School, White Plains, 1952-1953. She also taught at schools in Brooklyn and Hicksville.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1949 and made final vows in 1955. She was formerly known as Sister John Elizabeth.

She held a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University, and a master’s in math from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa.

She is survived by 12 nephews and two nieces.

A Funeral Mass was offered June 19 at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill. Burial was at St. Agnes Cemetery, Sparkill.
