Sister Rita Marie Carey, C.S.JB.

Sister Rita Marie Carey, C.S.JB., who served at St. John Villa Academy on Staten Island for 18 years, including as principal, assistant principal and teacher, died April 18, 2020 at White Plains Hospital, CNY has learned. She was 89.

She was principal at St. John Villa, 1993-1996, and served in other capacities there, 1989-1992; 1984-1988, 1980-1982, 1961-1963 and 1952-1956. She was at St. Roch School, Staten Island, 1996-2009; St. Dominic School, the Bronx, 1992-1993; and St. James, Manhattan, 1982-1984. She also served in New Jersey, Mississippi, Italy, Ireland and Zambia.

Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Sisters of St. John the Baptist in 1946 and professed her final vows in 1954.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Fordham University, the Bronx.

Her sister, Julie, survives her.

Burial was April 27, 2020 in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne. A Memorial Mass was offered Sept. 26, 2020 in Mount St. John Convent, Purchase.
