Sister Rita Marie Regan, M.M., who served more than 40 years in Taiwan, died Nov. 4 at Maryknoll Sisters Residential Care in Ossining. She was 99. She served in Taiwan from 1953 until 1994, continuing doing pastoral work there even after her retirement in 1989. Previously, she did evangelization work for 19 years and then served in an adult education program and did home visiting. Her first mission assignment as a Maryknoll Sister was in 1934, when she was assigned to China for catechetical work. From 1946 until 1951 she was superior of Maryknoll Sisters missioned to the Diocese of Kaying. After being under house arrest for a period, she was among the Maryknoll personnel who had to leave China after the communists took over. Born in Fairhaven, Mass., she entered Maryknoll in 1931. She professed final vows in 1937. Her older brother, Joseph W. Regan, joined Maryknoll before she did and later became bishop of the Diocese of Tagum, Mindanao Island, Philippines. Bishop Regan predeceased her. A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 8 at the Residential Care center, with burial in the sisters' cemetery.
