Sister Ruth Mitchell, O.P., who served six years at St. Martin de Porres School in Poughkeepsie, died May 6 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. She was 73.

Sister Ruth was a principal and teacher at St. Martin de Porres, 1981-1987. She taught at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Tappan, 1979-1981, and Holy Spirit School, the Bronx, 1973-1974.

She was treasurer of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, 1987-1999, and in the House on the Hill Migrant Worker Daycare Program, Goshen, 1974-1979. She also served in New Jersey and Florida.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt in 1964 and professed final vows in 1972.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Dominican College, Orangeburg, and a master’s in education from Fordham University, the Bronx. She was a founding member of Religious Organizations Along the River (ROAR).

Her twin brother, Thomas, survives her.

Burial was May 8 in St. Dominic’s Convent Cemetery, Blauvelt. A Memorial Mass will be offered at a later date.
