Sister Sheila Murphy, O.S.U.

Sister Sheila Murphy, O.S.U., who served as principal and teacher at schools in the Bronx, died Dec. 5 at Andrus on Hudson in Hastings-on-Hudson. She was 87.

She taught at Our Lady of Mercy School, the Bronx, 1973-1982, where she was principal, 1982-1986. She also taught at St. Philip Neri, the Bronx, 1966-1968, and served as principal, 1968-1972. She taught at St. Jerome, the Bronx, 1959-1966.

She also taught at schools in Maryland and Florida, and spent a year as an ESL teacher in Thailand.

Sister Sheila served her Ursuline community in many capacities, including superior of the Bedford Park Convent, the Bronx, 1999-2005. She was a board member of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula and the Mount St. Ursula Speech Center, both in the Bronx.

Most recently, she volunteered for more than a decade in a variety of ministries in Malone.

Born in Flushing, Queens, she entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1953 and made final vows in 1959. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle with a bachelor’s degree in art, and earned a master’s of fine arts from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 8 at the Ursuline Province Center Chapel in New Rochelle. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
