Sister Thérése Tangney, O.P.

Sister Thérése Tangney, O.P., a teacher in the Bronx for 20 years, died May 7 in Montefiore Nyack Hospital in Nyack. She was 92.

Sister Thérése taught in the Bronx at Msgr. Scanlan High School, 1966-1976; St. Helena School, 1960-1962; St. Joseph, 1955-1956; and Aquinas High School, 1956-1960 and 1950-1953.

Sister Thérése provided support services at Dowling Gardens, Sparkill, 2002-2011, and she was chaplain and office assistant for Westchester Development and Disability Services, 1980-1999. She was director of religious education for Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish, Tuxedo, 1978-1980, and was a member of the Dominican Convent House of Prayer, Sparkill, 1976-1978. She also served in Queens.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1953 and professed final vows in 1960. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Hunter College, Manhattan; a master’s in English from Fordham University, the Bronx; and a master’s in liturgy from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.

Her sister, Cora, survives her.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated May 10 in Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill. Burial was in St. Agnes Cemetery, Sparkill.
