Sister Valerie Heinonen, O.S.U.

Sister Valerie Heinonen, O.S.U., who served at the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility in Manhattan for 21 years, died Sept. 18 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood, L.I. She was 80.

Sister Valerie was at the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility as interim executive director, 2000-2001, and as program director for militarism, global finance and community economic development, 1976-1996. She served as councilor of her religious congregation’s leadership team, 2010-2016 and 1997-2003; and volunteered at Nazareth House, a small family shelter in lower Manhattan.

She also served in Brooklyn, Queens, Huntington and Connecticut.

Born in Bayport, she entered the Ursuline Sisters of Tidonk in 1958 and professed final vows in 1964.

She received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from St. John’s University, Queens, and a master’s in education from Fairfield University in Connecticut.

Her sister, Cynthia Richard, survives her.

Sister Valerie was cremated. A date for the Memorial Mass and burial had not been scheduled.
