Sister Virgil Kummer, O.P., who taught at Our Lady of Refuge in the Bronx for four years, died Oct. 25 at St. Dominic Villa in Hazel Green, Wis. She was 96.
Sister Virgil was at Our Lady of Refuge, 1965-1969. She also served in Illinois, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska and Texas.
Born in Minneapolis, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa in 1945 and professed final vows in 1950.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Rosary College, River Forest, Ill.; and a master’s in liturgy from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 5 at the motherhouse in Sinsinawa, Wis. Burial was in the motherhouse cemetery.
