The Sisters of Charity of New York elected their new president and council to four-year terms at Assembly 2019 in Tarrytown March 30 and 31.
Sister Donna Dodge, S.C., Ed.D., was elected president, and Sister Dorothy Metz, S.C., and Sister Dominica Rocchio, S.C., Ed.D., were appointed first and second assistant to the president.
The delegates elected Sister Sheila Brosnan, S.C.; Sister Margaret O’Brien, S.C.; Sister Margaret Egan, S.C., Ed.D.; and Sister Claire E. Regan, S.C., as councilors. Earlier in the assembly, the congregation voted to change the council titles from regional coordinator to councilor.
The elected leaders will step into their new roles July 1.
Sister Donna has served as director and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Housing Development Corp. since 2013, and served as assistant director, 2011-2013. The Cardinal Spellman High School graduate was assistant to the congregation president, 2007-2011; assistant to the president and director of planning and research at the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx, 1982-1992; and co-director of the congregation’s planning and research office, 1974-1982. Born in Manhattan, she taught in Yonkers at St. Mary’s School, 1974-1976, and St. Joseph, 1973-1974, and in the Bronx at Visitation, 1969-1973.
Sister Dorothy was president of the Sisters of Charity, 2003-2011, and regional coordinator, 1995-2003. She served in education for 36 years.
Sister Dominica has served as coordinator of special projects for the congregation since 2015. She was on the executive council as regional coordinator, 2007-2015, and associate superintendent of secondary schools in the archdiocese, 1980-1992.
Sister Sheila was re-elected to the executive council. She has served in education, nursing and pastoral care, serving in a senior position at ArchCare as well as in Guatemala.
Sister Margaret O’Brien is assistant to the president of the Sisters of Charity and has served as the congregation’s treasurer since 2012. She was regional coordinator, 2003-2011. She worked as a teacher, librarian and in administration.
Sister Margaret Egan is professor of teacher education at the College of Mount St. Vincent, where she has been teaching since 1971.
Sister Claire works for the Sisters of Charity Federation as a staff member in the House of Charity in New Orleans. Established in 2010, the House of Charity assists members of the community in the continuing rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina.
