The Ursuline School’s Sonia Citron was named the 2019-2020 New York State Class AA Girls Basketball Player of the Year by the New York State Sportswriters Association just days after she announced that she would attend the University of Notre Dame.
“So blessed and excited to announce my commitment to the University of Notre Dame. Thank you to everyone that has helped me along the way. I wouldn’t be where I am today without you,” she said on Twitter.
The 6-foot-1 junior guard, who also was selected as the 2019-2020 Gatorade New York State Girls Basketball Player of the Year, led Ursuline to a 24-0 record and the state public high schools Section 1 championship.
In 2019, she earned all-tournament honors for leading Team USA to the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) U16 Americas Championship in Chile.
She was one of 11 Catholic high school girls’ basketball players in the archdiocese to be named to the all-state team by the state sportswriters association.
In Class AA, Albertus Magnus sophomore Paulina Paris and Our Lady of Lourdes junior Ava Learn received second- and third-team honors, respectively. Ursuline junior Alexa Mustrafaj (ninth team) and Albertus Magnus senior Tanasha Mills (13th team) were also honored.
In Class A, Moore Catholic had two honorees, senior Amber Abusbeih on the third team and junior Jordan Welle on the ninth team. St. Joseph by-the-Sea senior Ashley Marrocco, sixth team; Notre Dame Academy senior Gianna Samuels, 13th team; and Cardinal Spellman senior Shanice Sinclair, 15th team, round out the Class A honorees.
In Class B, Notre Dame School junior Marie Cari made the eighth team.
