Turning 100, With Style and Grace

Sister Canis Walsh, R.S.H.M., celebrated her 100th birthday June 27 with a Mass celebrated by Father Andrew King, and lunch and cake at the Marymount Convent in Tarrytown.

Father King, who serves as master of ceremonies at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, was a seventh-grade student of Sister Canis at St. Ignatius Loyola School in Manhattan, where she taught, 1980-1995. Sister Canis also taught in the archdiocese at St. Lucy’s School, East Harlem, 1979-1980.

Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, Sister Canis entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1946 and professed final vows in 1953. She completed undergraduate studies at Marymount College, Tarrytown, and graduate studies at Hunter College, Manhattan.
