Some 200 volunteers participated in the Catholic Charities Project: “Help Us Build a Playground!’’ at Astor Services for Children and Families’ Lawrence Hickey Center for Child Development in the Bronx Oct. 5.

Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, executive director of archdiocesan Catholic Charities, was one of the speakers after volunteers from Catholic Charities, Walt Disney Co., ABC, Astor Services for Children and Families, KaBoom! and the community completed the playground. Astor Services is an affiliate of Catholic Charities.

The three-day project began with prep work by 35 community volunteers on the first two days, with the construction of the 2,500-square-foot playground on the third day.

KaBoom!, which organized the event, is a nonprofit organization with a mission of assuring “kids have the opportunity to play every day, everywhere.” Disney participates in such projects as part of the Walt Disney Company Healthy Living Commitment. KaBoom! and Disney have teamed up to build 75 playgrounds across the United States, giving almost 100,000 kids the opportunity to live a healthier lifestyle and play in safer places.
