Wrong Arrest Figure

Posted

Accuracy in editorializing is important. The Feb. 16 issue of CNY states that “...including five on Staten Island” in reference to the number of recent immigrant arrests. According to a list obtained from law enforcement officials, there were two arrests, not five as reported in CNY.

The two Mexican nationals were:

A 60 year old convicted of first degree sexual assault of a victim under 11 years old, and endangering the welfare of a child.

A 40 year old with a prior conviction of assault.

I believe a published statement acknowledging the inaccurate reporting is due your reader.

As regards to Staten Island, we hope we will see “a rhetorical sigh of relief on (your editorial) page...” as a result of this new information.

Staten Island

Editor’s Note: The writer is correct that the Feb. 16 editorial did contain inaccurate information about the number of immigrants arrested in the sweep on Staten Island. The correct number was two, not five as the CNY editorial said.

The figure in the editorial was based on the number given in several published reports. The revised figure was not reported until after CNY’s publication date.
