Thomas D. O’Malley, a 1963 alumnus and a former chairman of the board of trustees at Manhattan College, has committed $10 million toward the building of the new Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons.

The gift, the largest in the college’s history, will advance the college’s campaign to build a state-of-the-art student commons, which is scheduled to break ground at the end of the year.

St. John’s Receives McNair Scholars Grant

St. John’s University will receive a grant of nearly $1.1 million throughout five years for its selection by the U.S. Department of Education to participate in the McNair Scholars Program. This is the third time since 1999 the university has been chosen to implement the program, named for Ronald E. McNair, the NASA astronaut who died aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1986.

The program is designed to prepare first-generation, low-income and traditionally underrepresented students for graduate school. The grant will support the program throughout the next five years; 25 undergraduates will be selected annually to participate. Faculty mentors help students hone their research and presentation skills to prepare for graduate school. Participants receive a stipend to cover research expenses and travel to conferences.
