Cardinal Hayes High School begins play later this weekend in the CHSAA Class AA Intersectional Playoffs after beating its Bronx rival, St. Raymond’s High School, 60-53, for the archdiocesan boys’ basketball championship on Feb. 27.
Senior point guard Clive Allen scored 20 points and senior forward Quran Brickhouse added 11 for the Cardinals (19-7), who defeated the Ravens (16-11) for the third time this season.
Cardinal Hayes will meet the winner of the first-round contest between Mount St. Michael (10-14) and Xaverian (14-11), which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Prep. As the archdiocesan runnerup, St. Raymond’s earned a spot in the intersectional playoff quarterfinals and awaits the winner of Wednesday’s 6 p.m. first-round battle between All Hallows (7-17) and Christ The King (17-8) at St. Francis Prep.
There are two first-round intersectional playoff games on Thursday at St. Raymond, with Iona Prep (11-15) and St. Peter’s (12-14) meeting at 6 p.m. and Stepinac (10-16) and Holy Cross (10-15) battling at 7:30 p.m. Archbishop Molloy (21-5) and Bishop Loughlin (19-7) received first-round byes and will meet the winners of Thursday’s games in the quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined.
In the CHSAA Class A New York City playoffs, Scanlan (20-5) and Farrell (20-5) are competing in one semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Raymond’s, followed by the second semifinal between Kennedy Catholic (23-2) and Nazareth (12-13) at St. Raymond’s. The winners will play Friday at Fordham for the New York City championship.
In the CHSAA Class B playoffs, Sacred Heart (14-12) and Salesian (13-12) are meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at Fordham University for the New York City title. The winner will oppose upstate champion Nichols (10-17) for the CHSAA state championship at a time and place to be determined.
