The Church cannot stay out of politics when politics grants power over people that has moral consequences. The well being and destiny of every person is very much the concern and special competence of our Catholic and Christian churches. When those who want to keep religion out of politics lord politics over religion in their decisions, the hypocrisy is clear.
Canon law 915 of the 1983 Code states, "Those…who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.” Abortion is the gravest of sins. As a Catholic who spent 18 years learning Catholic doctrine in Catholic schools it was always made clear that if you commit a grave mortal sin, you must go to confession before receiving Holy Communion. Communion can be a gift of grace from God for a sinner but not if you receive Communion while in the state of mortal sin. This is twisting the real intent of Holy Communion to give license to public officials to continue Communion, even if they espouse abortion and all the activities to make it more accessible.
