Maryknoll Lay Missioners welcomed the 11 members of its 50th candidate class for their orientation program at Maryknoll in Ossining Oct. 1.
The 10-week annual orientation offers instruction on topics such as Maryknoll Lay Missioners history and core values, theology and Scripture, Catholic social teaching, practical training for conflict resolution and communication, and spiritual development and prayer. The missioners will each serve 3 1/2 years overseas.
“This fine group of faith-filled candidates represents the broad and beautiful diversity of the U.S. Church today,” said Sam Stanton, Maryknoll Lay Missioners executive director, in a statement. “We are happy and blessed to welcome them.”
Once the orientation is completed in December, the lay missioners prepare for their missions, which begin early next year.
“The orientation program is designed to prepare new missioners with a foundation in Scripture and in mission theology, so that they will be ready to use their gifts in service to others, walk with people of another culture and accompany them on their journeys,” said Joanne Blaney, mission services director for Maryknoll Lay Missioners.
Maryknoll Lay Missioners is a Catholic organization, inspired by the mission of Jesus. Missioners live in and work with poor communities in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Some 800 lay missioners have done mission work around the world. Single people, married couples or families who are Catholic and over the age of 21 can apply.
