Brother John P. Mahon, O.F.M., a New York City native who was guardian of St. Anthony Friary in Butler, N.J., died unexpectedly March 6 in the friary. He was 62.

He had recently been ill with the flu, and had a history of heart problems.

He had been guardian of St. Anthony’s since 2006. He was on the administrative staff of St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, 1999-2006. He served at Siena College in Loudonville, 1989-1999, as assistant director and then director of student activities, guardian of the friar community and assistant to the president. He was procurator of a friary in Brookline, Mass., 1987-1989. From 1982 to 1987 he served at Franciscan Advertising and Media in Fair Lawn, N.J.

He was an assistant principal in Connecticut, 1979-1982, and taught at Immaculata High School in Manhattan, 1976-1979.

Born in Manhattan, he attended St. Stephen of Hungary School and Immaculata High School. He entered the Franciscans of Holy Name Province in 1972. While in formation in Washington, D.C., he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Strayer College there. He professed final vows at St. Stephen of Hungary Church in Manhattan in 1976.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Mahon, and a brother, Ronald.

A Mass of thanksgiving for his life was offered March 11 at St. Stephen of Hungary Church in Manhattan. A Funeral Mass was celebrated March 12 at St. Anthony’s Church, with burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery, both in Butler.
