Father Matthew Farrelly, C.S.SP.

Father Matthew Farrelly, C.S.SP., who was a missionary in Africa for 16 years and served at St. Agnes parish, Manhattan, for 20 years, died Aug. 12 in Kimmage Manor, Dublin. He was 99.

Father Farrelly served at St. Agnes from 1980 until 2000. During this time he also assisted the Diocese of Banjul in Gambia with fund-raising.

He was the procurator general of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in Rome, 1966-1979. He was secretary general, 1964-1970.

He acted as secretary to the superior general in Paris, in 1952.

He was also a missionary in Mauritius, 1954-1962, and in Gambia, 1944-1952.

Born in County Cavan, Ireland, he joined the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Holy Ghost Fathers or the Spiritans, in Kilshane. He was professed in 1934 and ordained in 1942.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 15 at the church at Mission House, Kimmage, followed by burial in Dardistown Cemetery.
