Father Zachary Grant, O.F.M. Cap.

Father Zachary Grant, O.F.M. Cap., a former pastor of two Manhattan parishes, died Nov. 28 at Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry. He was 82.

He served as pastor and guardian of Our Lady Queen of Angels parish in Harlem, 1984-1987, where he had served as a parochial vicar, 1965-1967. He served as a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Sorrows on the Lower East Side, 1957-1962, and then as pastor and guardian of the friar community, 1967-1970.

He served in Honduras, 1981-1984.

He also dedicated many years of his religious life to the Secular Franciscan Order, beginning with his appointment as provincial director of the then-Third Order of St. Francis in 1979, with residence at Sacred Heart Friary in Yonkers. He also served in Massachusetts and Connecticut and was involved in the formation of young friars in Brooklyn and Pennsylvania.

Born in the Bronx, he entered the Capuchins’ novitiate in 1948 and professed final vows in 1953. He was ordained a priest in 1956.

His sisters, Leticia Grant-Cole and Anne Grant-Walsh, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 4 at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yonkers.
