Sister Anna Boland, M.M.

Sister Anna Boland, M.M., a missioner to Korea, died Oct. 6 while visiting her sister in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She was 83.

A physician, she practiced medicine in South Korea for 30 years, beginning in 1965. Her work included setting up an operating room at Maryknoll Hospital in Pusan and working as medical director and administrator for a rural clinic in Jeung Pyeong. She was known in the Pacific Rim as a specialist in the treatment of snakebites and burns. She also worked with indigent and homeless people in South Korea, 1995-1999.

Born in Armstrong, Ind., she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1949 and professed final vows in 1955. She received the religious name Sister Mary Ann Fidelis. She held a bachelor’s degree in biology from Good Counsel College and earned her medical degree at St. Louis University Medical School.

She received an award from the South Korean government for her work in public health, and the alumni merit award from St. Louis University.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Hardy, and a brother, John.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 15 in the sisters’ chapel, with burial in the sisters’ cemetery, both in Ossining.
