Sister Cecilia Haley, S.C., who taught for more than 40 years, including 15 at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School on Staten Island, died Nov. 28 at Schervier Nursing Care Center in the Bronx. She was 98.

She taught social studies at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, 1971-1986.

She taught in Manhattan at Our Lady of Good Counsel School, 1940-1942; Incarnation, 1945-1949; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 1956-1958; Holy Name of Jesus, 1958-1961; and Sacred Heart, 1961-1963. She also taught at St. Joseph’s, Yonkers, 1949-1950; SS. Peter and Paul, the Bronx, 1950-1956; and Sacred Heart, Staten Island, 1961-1963.

She was part of the administrative team at Convent of Mary the Ocean Star, Ventnor, N.J., in the Diocese of Camden, 1986-1993.

Born on Staten Island, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1938 and professed final vows in 1944. She was formerly known as Sister Cecilia Marie.

She held a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent and a master’s in social studies from Richmond Community College.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 5 at Mount St. Vincent Convent in the Bronx. Burial followed in St. Agatha Cemetery, Nanuet.
